Peter's apartment, Saturday night

After the last few times and getting more people than he'd ever planned on, Peter was giving up.

He'd just drawn up some half-assed signs and taped them in the apartment lobby and on his door.

BYOB and food if you don't want pizza and beer

And they were definitely not watching any animated anything tonight. That stuff was way too traumatizing.

You know what? Pizza and beer suited Kanan just fine. That said, he'd discovered microwave popcorn while buying groceries yesterday, and the idea (to microwave it, not popcorn. They had popcorn back home, too) had been novel enough that he couldn't pass it up. So, here was Kanan, armed with popcorn but still totally ready to drink Peter's beer.

"Please," he pleaded, "tell me this one isn't a cartoon."

Seriously. They were way too traumatizing.

"No cartoons," Peter said firmly. "We're trying for something not filled with issues today. I think modern musicals are mostly pretty light," and Sparkle wasn't here yet to disabuse him of this notion, "so I found one of those. It's called Cabaret. About performers in a nightclub."

Also, nazis.

"Anyway. Can I get you a beer?"

Yep, this was going to go super well.

"You can always get me a beer," Kanan chuckled, shrugging his shoulders. "Musicals aren't usually my thing, but hey, so long as it's something light and relatively brainless, I'll take it."

Sigh.

"That's the goal." Peter opened a beer and handed it to Kanan. "How's your week been?"

"I'm still surviving, so I can't complain too much," Kanan replied, accepting the beer and shrugging. He paused to take a swig before adding, "Half convinced my co-teacher is bound and determined to get me to pick up a sword or something, though."

Between Japan and Rome, anyway...

"Maybe I should start doing forms with more than just a practice weapon again, at least."

"I wouldn't mind shaking a bit of the rust off, myself," Peter said. "Want to spar sometime? My form's probably a lot different than yours, but that might be a good thing."

"Could be a welcome challenge for the both of us, huh?" Kanan smirked faintly. "Careful, we might both learn a thing or two from one another."

A pause.

"Have you got any practice weapons? I'm not opposed to using a live blade, but I don't know if yours'll hold up."

That was not intended as a slight against your sword, Peter.

"I only have mine." Peter waved to where it hung on the wall. "I'm sure we can find something, though."

[uncertain_dume]

"How's two pieces of pipe from the scrapyard sound? I'm sure Hera wouldn't mind parting with one for you so that I have somebody to swing mine around at," Kanan offered. "My other option..."

He waved toward the sword on the wall.

"Wouldn't play nicely with that one, I don't think."

"That, or I'm sure we can find practice blades somewhere. The only problem will be finding something properly balanced. You saw what the modern version of swords are like at the Renaissance festival."

[uncertain_dume]

"Abysmal, you mean?" Kanan nodded his agreement. "Yeah, I remember. I think the only thing I was relieved about there was that they didn't keep those blades terribly sharp, either."

So they could bludgeon one another to death instead of hacking off each others' limbs.

"But they might work for practice. Or we could find wooden blades," Peter suggested.

[uncertain_dume]

"Wood," Kanan replied, cracking a little grin. Okay, that was cute. Earth, you continued to be cute. "I did see people using wooden swords in Japan. They aren't quite the same... anything... as your sword. Probably a little closer to what I'm used to. But it's a start."

"Yeah, those are more like actual weapons themselves, I think," Peter said. He grinned. "Is wood not a thing in space?"

"Wood is totally a thing," Kanan chuckled, "you know, on planets and moons. Find me a tree that grows in space and I'll call poodoo."

Okay, with words like that, space was pretty cute, too.

"But we didn't train with it. I had a practice saber, before I made mine. I suppose a few thousand years ago there were electroblades, but even those? Still not wood."

Sure, some lightsabers could be made out of wood, but that was the hilt, not the blade itself.

"So, could you make a practice saber again?" Peter asked.

[uncertain_dume]

"Out of what they have here?" Kanan frowned thoughtfully. "Short answer, no. I could adjust the output on the weapon I have, but all that would really accomplish is that I'd be using a comparatively harmless saber, and you'd still be swinging a blade around."

Which, for various reasons, kind of seemed like maybe Kanan would be getting the short end of the stick, there.

"The trouble with making new ones are the raw materials," he added, after a moment's pause. "As far as I'm aware, Earth doesn't have what I'd need, and I'm not in any hurry to draw the wrong kind of attention by looking for it back home."

"So we'll just have to go with very old-fashioned wood," Peter said. "I'll check around and see what I can find."

[uncertain_dume]

"Sounds like a plan," Kanan replied, grinning faintly. "Then we can stake out a spot in the park or the preserve, and... well... beat on each other with sticks."

He hadn't had somebody to spar against in forever. He'd splurge on getting a remote, but that would definitely not be a 'training in the apartment' thing.

"Hopefully more dodging than beating," Peter said.

He was counting on you to dodge, Kanan, so he wouldn't have to pull his swings too much.

"And hopefully more blocking than having to dodge," Kanan countered.

Don't worry, Peter. Kanan was good at both. And for moments when he wasn't, he had bacta. And a Hera who would never let him live it down.

"That depends on your style, I guess," Peter said. "And your strength."

Since Peter was...somewhat stronger than any human.

And Kanan... well, he could be. He was definitely far more agile. The fun would really start when they both fell into a rhythm with one another and neither one decided to hold back.

"I guess," Kanan replied, grinning faintly. "Looks like we'll find out, huh?"

"I look forward to it." Peter toasted him with his beer bottle.
